Forty-five minutes from the Daman seafront
Daman and Silvassa share a union territory and, for stone, a factory. Most marble sold in Daman is bought as finished slabs through dealers in Vapi or Mumbai. Flora Marble buys the blocks, direct from the quarries with no middlemen, and cuts, resin-treats and polishes them itself at Athal, Silvassa, as it has since 2002.
For a Daman buyer that means seeing the lot where it was made, forty-five minutes inland, and talking to the people who will finish it, rather than choosing from a sample piece on a dealer's counter.
Stone for the coast
Salt air, monsoon rain and strong sun are hard on a building, and the stone should be chosen for them. Outside, on terraces, pool surrounds, steps and façades, granite and quartzite hold their polish and their colour, and a honed or leathered finish keeps them safe underfoot when wet. Indoors, out of the weather, the choice opens up: beige and white marbles for floors and walls, onyx for a reception counter or a bar that can be lit from behind, travertine where a lighter, sandy look suits a beach house.
The lot for the whole building is cut and finished at Silvassa, so the terrace granite, the lobby marble and the bar top come from one plant on one finish schedule, numbered and photographed before they leave.

Daman's hotels and resorts order at quantity: lobbies, corridors, bathrooms by the dozen, counters and lift lobbies. Blocks and slab lots are held in the project's name so the whole order matches, and cut-to-size pieces are made to the drawings before the crates are packed.
Holiday homes at Devka, Jampore and Moti Daman order the other way round, a few chosen slabs for a floor and a wall, and get the same attention: the slab you choose in the shed is the slab that arrives.
