How to Choose Marble for a Bathroom

Marble and bathrooms are a natural pairing

A bathroom sees far less acid than a kitchen, which makes it one of the best rooms for marble. White marbles bring a calm, spa-like luxury, and a single book-matched slab behind a vanity or in a shower becomes the room's centrepiece.

What to consider

• Finish — honed (matte) is less slippery underfoot and hides water marks and etching better than a polish.
• Sealing — seal the stone and reseal periodically so it resists moisture and staining.
• Cosmetics — some toiletries and cleaners are acidic and can etch; wipe spills and use stone-safe products.
• Slip — for floors and wet areas, choose honed or textured finishes over a high polish.

Which marbles work well

The white Italian marbles — Calacatta, Statuario and Carrara — are the classic choices for a luxury bathroom, while warm neutrals such as Crema Marfil suit a softer palette. Onyx, lit from behind, makes a spectacular feature wall.
