Choosing Stone for Floors

A floor is a long-term decision
Stone underfoot can outlast everything else in a room, so the choice is worth getting right. Two things matter more on a floor than on a wall: how it behaves underfoot when wet, and how it wears under years of traffic.
Which stones work on floors
- Marble
- Timeless and elegant. Best in a honed finish on floors — less slippery and better at hiding etching and wear than a high polish.
- Travertine
- Warm, tactile and naturally suited to floors indoors and out; textured finishes are pleasantly slip-resistant.
- Granite
- Extremely hard-wearing and the most forgiving in very high-traffic or wet areas.
Why finish matters underfoot
- Honed and textured finishes are less slippery than a high polish — safer in bathrooms, kitchens and entrances.
- Matte surfaces hide the micro-scratches and etching that grit and footfall bring.
- All stone floors should be sealed, and resealed periodically, to resist staining.
- For outdoor floors and pool surrounds, choose textured travertine or granite.
